Fail Locked Spring to Close/Open (FLSC/FLSO) These terms are used to identify which side of the diaphragm actuator the spring is to be mounted. In real terms the pneumatic hook-up design should include a pneumatic relay set at a value that is considered to be an ‘Instrument Air’ failure (say 0.3MPag). The effect of an air failure will be to lock the air in the actuator thereby trapping the control valve in its position at the time of the air failure.
